Chiropractic CE Requirements
Chiropractic licenses must be renewed on or before April 1 of each even numbered year. The renewal fee is $500 and is non-refundable. 36 hours of CE per biennium is required to renew a license, of which 1.5 hours must be on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism. CE must be earned within the renewal biennium and may not be carried over from one renewal period to the next. Licensees must maintain proof of CE attendance for three years from the conclusion of each program. Licensees applying for their first initial renewal are exempt from earning CE for their first initial renewal only.
CE MUST BE EARNED AS FOLLOWS:
If you reside OR practice in Ohio , you must earn at least 24 hours of CE in Ohio. The remaining 12 hours of CE may be earned within the state of Ohio, outside of Ohio, or via *supervised self-instruction. The required 1.5 hours of CE on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism may be earned within the state of Ohio, outside of Ohio, or *via supervised self-instruction. (If you choose to earn your 1.5 hours of ethics out of state or via supervised self-instruction, you must still earn 24 hours of Board-approved in-state CE.) All programs held in Ohio for CE credit must be registered with the Board and posted on our Board approved seminar list. If a program is not registered on this list it will not be accepted for license renewal.
If you reside AND practice outside Ohio, you may earn all required 36 hours of CE, including the 1.5 hours on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism, within the state of Ohio, outside of Ohio, or *via supervised self instruction.
CE earned outside Ohio or via *supervised self instruction shall be sponsored by a Board-approved chiropractic educational institution, non-profit association, accredited academic health institution or hospital and comply with the requirements outlined in Board Rule 4734-7-03.
No list of out of state CE or CE offered via *supervised self instruction is maintained by the Board. As long as the program is sponsored by a Board-approved chiropractic educational institution, non-profit association, accredited academic health institution, or hospital AND is comprised of one or more of the topics outlined in Board Rule 4734-7-03 (B), it will be accepted for license renewal.
*Supervised self-instruction is defined as audio/video or internet programs.
Chiropractic continuing education topics are defined as programs comprised of one or more of the following subjects: Clinical diagnosis and examination procedures; diagnostic imaging; neurology; nutrition; public health, hygiene, sanitation; manipulation and adjusting procedures; physiological therapeutics; orthopedics; emergency procedures; principles and practice; philosophy; laboratory procedures; anatomy; physiology; rehabilitative procedures/exercise; ethics/boundaries; staff development and training; documentation; risk management; ethics/professionalism; laws and rules of the board; and other subjects related to the practice of chiropractic as deemed appropriate by the board.
Acupuncture programs approved for acupuncture CE will not be accepted for chiropractic license renewal unless the program is also registered on the List of Seminars Approved for Chiropractic License Renewal. The only exception to this requirement is for those who are earning their initial 300 hours of acupuncture training. These hours may be applied to the required 34.5 hours of continuing education. (The 1.5 hours in ethics and/or professionalism is still required.) If you possess both a chiropractic license and an acupuncture certificate, you must earn a total of 48 hours of CE per biennium (36 chiropractic and 12 acupuncture.)
Special circumstances
Instructors of CE programs that are offered for Ohio CE credit and sponsored by a Board-approved CE sponsor may be granted the number of CE hours in which they teach. In order to obtain Board approval, the instructor must submit a written request to the Board at least thirty days prior to the date of the program. Subsequent license renewal requirements shall not be met in whole or in part by instruction of the same course. Instructors are not exempt from earning 1.5 hours of ethics and/or professionalism CE.
The Board may grant a licensee CE credit for participating in educational programs that the Board directs for new licensees related to the consequences of disciplinary action.
A waiver, extension, or reduction of CE hours may be granted due to illness, disability, or other good cause shown if it affected a reasonable opportunity and precluded you from participating in CE activities. A request for a waiver, extension, or reduction of CE hours must be made to the Board in writing no less than sixty days prior to the expiration of your license.
